1982 NLCS Game 1: SD @ Mon.

October 6, 1982

 In an exciting game Game1of the 1982 NLCS the San Diego Padres came from behind to defeat the Montreal Expos in 11 innings 4-3. Both starters pitched strong ballgames, Bill Gullickson for the Expos and Tim Lollar for the Padres. Montreal held a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th inning but Gary Templeton (pictured) spoiled the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans when he hit a 2-run homer for a 3-2 Padres lead. Montreal was able to scratch out a run in the bottom of the 9th sending the game into extra innings. Then in the top of the 11th, a 2 base throwing error by 3rd baseman Tim Wallach put Templeton at 2nd with 2 outs. Luis Salazar was up next and he came through with a clutch RBI single giving San Diego a 4-3 lead. Luis Deleon came on in relief and closed out the game for a 4-3 Padre victory.
 Game 2 tomorrow in Montreal will have Steve Rogers (22-7, 2.44 ERA) starting for the Expos while San Diego will start John Montefusco (8-12, 2.93 ERA).

One run was the difference at Olympic Stadium as the San Diego Padres defeated
the Montreal Expos in 11 innings 4 to 3.
 
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  Finally, San Diego prevailed
in the 11th inning.  After two outs Garry Templeton reached on an error.
Luis Salazar came next and he smacked a single scoring the run.  San Diego
finished with 7 hits in the victory.  
 
The victory was credited to Mike Griffin(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Griffin got help from Luis Deleon who was credited with his 1st save.
Bryn Smith(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He was the victim of a
defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
