Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia ended
up winning it in the 21st inning. Gary Matthews doubled. Mike Schmidt
stepped into the batter's box and he was walked intentionally. Two outs
later Maddox stepped up to the plate and he stroked a one-base hit giving
Philadelphia the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.
Philadelphia had 19 hits for the night while St. Louis had 14.
John Denny(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. John
Martin(4-3) suffered the loss in relief. With the win Philadelphia now has a
record of 73-70. With this loss, St. Louis has a 5-5 record of late, 89-53
overall.
