It was a wild one in the opening game of the 1982 ALCS. The visiting Detroit Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead chasing California starter Ken Forsch in the 1st inning. Larry Herndon hit a 2-run blast in the inning. The Tigers scored in each of the first 4 innings, but the Angels kept pecking away and starting the 5th inning Detroit's lead was only 7-4 . Tiger starter Jack Morris was ineffective and finally chased in the 6th inning after giving up 8 hits including 2 homeruns. His replacement, Bob James, promptly gave up a 2-run homer to Bobby Grich and the game was tied 7-7. Grich was the hero of the game for California when he hit his 2nd 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th off Elias Sosa giving the Angels a 9-7 lead. Grich ended up 3-3 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI on the day. Dave Goltz came on to pitch for the Angels in the 6th inning and he shut the Tigers down the rest of the way earning the Win. Detroit out-hit California 15-10 but the Angels out-homered them 4-2, and more importantly outscored them 9-7.
Game 2 will be tomorrow night. Dan Petry (16-11, 3.42) will start for Detroit, Geoff Zahn (18-9, 3.84) gets the start for California.

Second baseman Bobby Grich ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the California
Angels outscored the Detroit Tigers 9 to 7.
It seemed that Detroit pitching was serving up softballs for Grich to hit. He
banged out a single bringing in a run in the 2nd inning, lifted one out of
the park for a two run home run in the 6th inning and bombed a two-run dinger
in the 8th inning. Offensively, California was a juggernaut. They scored in
6 separate innings.
Dave Goltz(1-0) went 4 innings allowing no runs for the win. Elias Sosa(0-1)
absorbed the loss in relief. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and
swung,' Grich said. 'That's it'
