1982 AL Game and Standings: Detroit Clinches the Pennant!

September 29, 1982

The Detroit Tigers clinched the AL East Pennant tonight by winning a hard fought contest against the Baltimore Orioles. It took 10 innings but Detroit continued to battle back and won the contest in dramatic fashion 5-4. Alan Trammell (right) was the hero tonight for Detroit. The Tigers trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th when, with 1 out, Alan Trammell tied the game up with a homer off Tippy Martinez. In the top of the 10th inning Tiger rookie pitcher Dave Rucker gave up a homerun to Oriole rookie Cal Ripken for a 4-3 Baltimore lead. Detroit wasn't going to go down without a fight though. After getting a pinch-hit homerun from John Wockenfuss to tie the game, the Tigers managed to load the bases with 2 outs and Alan Trammell coming up to bat. Trammell lofted a little looper into short rightfield that dropped in for a base hit, scoring the winning run and sending the hometown fans into a frenzy! The Detroit Tigers are the 1982 AL East Champions!
