1982 ALCS Game 5: California Wins the AL Pennant!

October 10, 1982

  The California Angels are the 1982 AL Champions! California defeated the Detroit Tigers tonight in Game 5 of the ALCS 4-2. The game was a tight battle until the 9th inning. Tiger starter Jack Morris was able to get out of a number of jams throughout the game until Reggie Jackson hit a solo homerun with 2 outs in the 9th.
  Detroit scored 2 runs off Angel starter Ken Forsch in the 1st inning on 2 hits and a rare error by 3rd baseman Doug Decinces. In the top of the 5th inning Reggie Jackson, who had been struggling at the plate all Series, hit a 2-run homer off Morris tying the game at 2. The game remained tied at 2 until the 9th when Jackson hit his 2nd homerun of the game. The Angels added another run in the inning making it 4-2 and Detroit went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. Ken Forsch went the distance for California allowing only 2 unearned runs on 4 hits. The California Angels are the 1982 AL Champions!

Right fielder Reggie Jackson cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Ken Forsch
had a strong outing as the California Angels beat the Detroit Tigers by a
score of 4 to 2.
 
California came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning plating 2
runs on 3 base hits.  After two were out Jackson started the attack as he
cracked a solo homerun.  Don Baylor stepped up next and he lined a one-base
hit.  Fred Lynn then doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  California
totaled 12 hits on the night.  
 
Forsch(1-0) allowed 2 runs on the game. Jack Morris(0-1) absorbed the loss.
He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 and
2/3 innings.  
 
'He came out with good stuff,' Gene Mauch said about Forsch. 'He threw the
ball good from the first pitch on.'
