Chris Speier connected with a 'big fly' and Charlie Lea came through with a
solid 9 innings at Jack Murphy Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the San
Diego Padres by the score of 3 to 1.

Montreal scored all of the necessary runs in the 7th inning when they came up
with 3 runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Tim Wallach who
quieted the home crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.
Montreal rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Lea(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Eric Show(0-1) was
hit with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.

When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Show was lavish in his
praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long
night. Lea brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to
spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire
game!

1982 AL ALCS Game 2: Det. @ Cal.

October 6, 1982

Dan Petry and the Detroit Tigers evened the 1982 ALCS at 1 game apiece by defeating the California Angels 7-2 tonight in Anaheim. Petry was very strong on the mound pitching a complete game for the Win. California jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning scoring an unearned run after a 2 base error by leftfielder Larry Herndon. Detroit struck for 4 runs in the 4th, the big hit a 2-run homer by Mike Ivie. That would be all Petry would need in evening the Series 1-1.
The Series will now move to Detroit. Jerry Ujdur (13-6, 3.57) will start for the Tigers. Bruce Kison (9-7, 2.53) starts for California.

1982 NLCS Game 1: SD @ Mon.

October 6, 1982

In an exciting game Game1of the 1982 NLCS the San Diego Padres came from behind to defeat the Montreal Expos in 11 innings 4-3. Both starters pitched strong ballgames, Bill Gullickson for the Expos and Tim Lollar for the Padres. Montreal held a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th inning but Gary Templeton (pictured) spoiled the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans when he hit a 2-run homer for a 3-2 Padres lead. Montreal was able to scratch out a run in the bottom of the 9th sending the game into extra innings. Then in the top of the 11th, a 2 base throwing error by 3rd baseman Tim Wallach put Templeton at 2nd with 2 outs. Luis Salazar was up next and he came through with a clutch RBI single giving San Diego a 4-3 lead. Luis Deleon came on in relief and closed out the game for a 4-3 Padre victory.
Game 2 tomorrow in Montreal will have Steve Rogers (22-7, 2.44 ERA) starting for the Expos while San Diego will start John Montefusco (8-12, 2.93 ERA).

1982 ALCS Game 1: Det. @ Cal.

October 5, 1982

It was a wild one in the opening game of the 1982 ALCS. The visiting Detroit Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead chasing California starter Ken Forsch in the 1st inning. Larry Herndon hit a 2-run blast in the inning. The Tigers scored in each of the first 4 innings, but the Angels kept pecking away and starting the 5th inning Detroit's lead was only 7-4 . Tiger starter Jack Morris was ineffective and finally chased in the 6th inning after giving up 8 hits including 2 homeruns.  His replacement, Bob James, promptly gave up a 2-run homer to Bobby Grich and the game was tied 7-7. Grich was the hero of the game for California when he hit his 2nd 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th off Elias Sosa giving the Angels a 9-7 lead. Grich ended up 3-3 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI on the day. Dave Goltz came on to pitch for the Angels in the 6th inning and he shut the Tigers down the rest of the way earning the Win. Detroit out-hit California 15-10 but the Angels out-homered them 4-2, and more importantly outscored them 9-7.
Game 2 will be tomorrow night. Dan Petry (16-11, 3.42) will start for Detroit, Geoff Zahn (18-9, 3.84) gets the start for California.

Second baseman Bobby Grich ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the California
Angels outscored the Detroit Tigers 9 to 7.

It seemed that Detroit pitching was serving up softballs for Grich to hit. He
banged out a single bringing in a run in the 2nd inning, lifted one out of
the park for a two run home run in the 6th inning and bombed a two-run dinger
in the 8th inning. Offensively, California was a juggernaut. They scored in
6 separate innings.

Dave Goltz(1-0) went 4 innings allowing no runs for the win. Elias Sosa(0-1)
absorbed the loss in relief. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and
swung,' Grich said. 'That's it'
