1982 NL Opening Day in Cincinnati

April 5, 1982

  The 1982 NL baseball season began today with its traditional opening day game in Cincinnati. The Reds hosted the Chicago Cubs on a beautiful spring day at a packed Riverfront Stadium. The visitors got off to a quick start by scoring a run in the top of the 1st off Mario Soto. Cincinnati scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and never trailed again, winning the opener 6-2.

Mario Soto whiffed 10 batters as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Chicago Cubs
by a score of 6 to 2 at Riverfront Stadium.
 
Soto(1-0) gave a fine effort for Cincinnati.  He went 7 and 2/3 innings
surrendering 8 hits and no walks.  Cincinnati ended up with 13 hits for the
game while Chicago had 9.  
 
Soto was helped out by Joe Price who recorded his 1st save.  The loss was
charged to Doug Bird(0-1).  Soto was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It
was a lot of fun out there.  The fans gave me a lot of support as did my
teammates.  We got the victory and I'll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!'
