Designated hitter Hal McRae blasted 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Kansas
City Royals bested the Detroit Tigers 6 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.

McRae was a source of great heartache for the Detroit faithful all evening.
He just kept pounding out hits! He bombed a two-run dinger in the 2nd inning,
blasted a solo shot in the 4th inning, ripped a solo home run in the 6th
inning and doubled in the 8th inning. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Paul Splittorff(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Larry Pashnick(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 4 homeruns in 6 and
1/3 innings of work.

Sparky Anderson was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is
really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it
is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just
barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
