After having their Home Opener postponed twice due to bad weather, the Detroit Tigers finally got the 1982 season started in Kansas City. For the Royals, the game was their Home Opener after starting the season in Baltimore. The Tigers went out in front first when John Wockenfuss hit a 3-run homer in the 4th inning. Kansas City tied the game up on a 2-run blast by Amos Otis in the 4th and a solo shot from George Brett in the 6th. Detroit scored what proved to be the game winning run in the 8th inning when rookie Howard Johnson came through with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single. It was Johnson's first ML at bat. Starter Jack Morris buckled down the last 2 innings and closed out the complete game 4-3 victory for Detroit.

Jack Morris went the distance at Royals Stadium as the Detroit Tigers beat the
Kansas City Royals 4 to 3.
Detroit scored the deciding run in the 8th inning. After an out was recorded,
John Wockenfuss delivered a single. After another out, Enos Cabell stepped
up to the plate and he singled. Howard Johnson then laced a one-base hit
scoring the run. Kansas City made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.
The victory was credited to Morris(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Larry Gura(0-1) was the loser. 'We didn't get the key hits when we
needed them' Dick Howser said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out
the win. What can you say?'
