1982 NL Opening Day Game Stories

April 6, 1982

   Three NL teams played their Opening Day games on this 2nd day of the 1982 MLB season. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers let down the hometown faithful by losing their game against the San Francisco Giants 5-1. The San Diego Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-3 on a big 7th inning when they scored all 4 runs. The Houston Astros won their Opener over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3-1.

Left fielder Gene Richards had 3 base hits as the San Diego Padres topped the
Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 3 at Jack Murphy Stadium.
 
Juan Eichelberger(1-0) had a solid outing for San Diego.  He allowed 2 hits
and 3 walks in 7 innings.  Gary Lucas pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 1st
save.  
 
The losing pitcher was Rick Camp(0-1) in relief.  He pitched 1/3 of an inning
giving up 4 hits and 1 walk.

The San Francisco Giants toppled the Los Angeles Dodgers by a 5 to 1 score at
Dodger Stadium.
 
Al Holland(1-0) had a fairly solid outing.  He went 5 innings surrendering 7
hits and no walks.  San Francisco managed 10 hits in their victory.
 
Holland got relief help from Greg Minton who gained credit for his 1st save.
Jerry Reuss(0-1) was charged with the loss.

The Houston Astros got by the St. Louis Cardinals at The Astrodome.  The final
score was 3 to 1.
 
Frank Lacorte(1-0) contributed a very nice performance in relief.  He didn't
give up much, just 2 hits and no walks in 2 innings.  Lacorte got relief help
from Dave Smith who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 1st
save.  
 
Bob Forsch(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  He gave up 7 hits and 1 walk in 6 and
1/3 innings.
