1982 AL Standings and League Leaders

April 20, 1982

A little over 2 weeks into the 1982 MLB season a disparity in games played by teams is noticed. Weather issues have affected many teams in the AL with some having played 14 games and some only 9. Baltimore in the AL East and California in the West have gotten off to the best starts in MLB. The Orioles are 9-1 and currently on a 7 game winning streak. The Angels are 11-3 and on a 6 game streak. The Minnesota Twins, who opened the year in a new domed stadium, have gotten off to a horrible start and sit at 2-12. My Detroit Tigers are 7-5, exactly the same record as the actual 1982 season.
California's Brian Downing has gotten off to a terrific start on the year. He leads the AL in HR's with 8 and RBI with 21. Oaklands Rickey Henderson is off to a record setting # of Stolen Bases. He has 14 SB in 14 games played.

1982 NL Standings and League Leaders

April 20, 1982

Weather has been a big factor at the start of the 1982 MLB season. About 2 weeks into the season 1 NL team has played 14 games and some teams as little as 9. The 1 team is the Houston Astros who have had the luxury of playing its' home games under a dome. Montreal and Pittsburgh have gotten off to good starts in the NL East while San Diego and San Francisco have done the same in the West. It is noted that the Atlanta Braves, who started the actual '82 season 12-0, are only 5-7 at this point.
Chicago's Leon Durham and the Giant's Reggie Smith have gotten off to very hot starts this year.

Designated hitter Hal McRae blasted 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Kansas
City Royals bested the Detroit Tigers 6 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.

McRae was a source of great heartache for the Detroit faithful all evening.
He just kept pounding out hits! He bombed a two-run dinger in the 2nd inning,
blasted a solo shot in the 4th inning, ripped a solo home run in the 6th
inning and doubled in the 8th inning. Detroit made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Paul Splittorff(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Larry Pashnick(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 4 homeruns in 6 and
1/3 innings of work.

Sparky Anderson was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is
really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it
is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just
barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

1982 NL Game: Chi. @ Pit.

April 16, 1982

The Chicago pitching staff couldn't stop Pittsburgh's Bill Madlock (pictured) from getting a hit today. For that matter, the Cubs could hardly stop any opposing batter from getting a hit as Pittsburgh pounded them 18-8. The Pirates had 25 hits in all and Madlock was a perfect 6 for 6 with 3 RBI. Chicago wasn't too bad at the plate themselves with 8 runs scored. The teams combined for 37 hits, most in a 9 inning game in MLB this year.

1982 Detroit Home Opener

April 15, 1982

The Detroit Tigers finally had their 1982 Home Opening Game at Tiger Stadium today. The Tigers original home opening series against Toronto was postponed by bad weather, but today was a beautiful spring afternoon down at The Corner.
The game began as a pitching duel between Detroit's Dave Rozema and Toronto's Dave Stieb. It was 1-0 in favor of Detroit when the Tigers blew the game open in the bottom of the 6th with a Larry Herndon Grand Slam Homer. The Tigers added 3 runs in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and Rozema (pictured) completed the 9-0, 2-hit shutout victory for his 2nd Win of the season.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Herndon. He slapped a single in the 2nd inning, lashed a
one-base hit scoring a run in the 4th inning and launched a rocket-shot out
of the park for a Grand Slam homerun in the 6th inning. Detroit rapped out
11 hits for the afternoon.

Rozema(2-0) went the distance for the shutout. Dave Stieb(0-1) was charged
with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in 6
innings.

'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a
good groove.' Rozema said after the game. 'I'm ready to start another game
tomorrow!'

1982 AL Standings and League Leaders

April 12, 1982

Just like the NL, the AL saw many games canceled due to bad weather during the first week of the 1982 MLB season. One team, the Minnesota Twins, opened the year in a new domed stadium, The Metrodome. Weather wasn't a factor for the Twins but winning games was. Minnesota lost all 6 of its games at home. The Twins were outscored 46-13 in those 6 games. The California Angeles are off to a good start. The Angeles lead the AL West with a 5-1 record and have a +20 Run Differential.
My Detroit Tigers had their 2 season opening games at home against Toronto canceled due to snow. The Tigers had to travel to Kansas City to get their season started and took 2 of 3 games against the Royals.

1982 NL Standings and League Leaders

April, 12,1982

The first week in the 1982 MLB season saw many games being delayed or canceled in the NL due to bad weather. Pittsburgh only played 2 games in the first week while a city with a domed stadium, Houston, has played 6 games. One city that saw nice weather, Los Angeles California, had many Dodger fans thinking rainouts may have been a better start for their team. LA opened the season with 4 home games and the Dodgers lost them all. Another team off to a rough start is the New York Mets. The Mets are also winless on the season, going 0 for 4.
The San Diego Padres have gotten off to the best start in the NL. They are 4-0 with a +18 Run Differential. The Chicago Cubs are in 1st place in the NL East. After dropping their opener, the Cubs have won 4 straight.

Rich Dauer had 2 base hits and Mike Flanagan carried a no-hitter into the 9th
inning at Memorial Stadium where the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red
Sox 2 to 0.

Flanagan(1-0) was simply too much for the Boston batters. He gave up just 1
hit and 2 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed Flanagan lost a no-hitter when
Rich Gedman singled with two outs in the 9th inning. Baltimore finished with
7 hits in the victory.

John Tudor(0-1) was hit with the loss. 'Flanagan gave us exactly what we
needed today.' Earl Weaver said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for
strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had
them chasing it.'
