1982 NL Standings

July 6, 1982

 Things are tightening up in both divisions in the NL. The Atlanta Braves have been red hot, winning their last 7 in a row. The Braves have moved into 2nd place in the NL West, just 3 GB the slumping San Diego Padres.
In the NL East, both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos have gained ground on the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates have pulled 1.5 GB the Cardinals

In a thriling finish the blistering-hot Atlanta Braves pulled off the win over
the Chicago Cubs by a score of 6 to 3 at Fulton Co Stadium.
 
Atlanta scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs.  After an out was recorded, Glenn Hubbard opened up the rally as he
drew a walk.  After another out, Dale Murphy came up and he drew a walk.  Bob
Horner then belted a three-run homer resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Atlanta and the 30,160 home town fans in attendance.  Atlanta and Chicago
each finished the night with 8 hits.  
 
The winning pitcher was Steve Bedrosian(6-2) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. The loss was charged to Ken Kravec(0-1) in relief.  He pitched 2/3 of
an inning allowing 1 hit and 2 walks.

Bill Madlock went deep as the Pittsburgh Pirates bested the Houston Astros 7
to 2 at Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Pittsburgh scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning with the help of 3
hits.  The crucial at-bat was provided by Mike Easler who brought a roar from
the partisan Three Rivers Stadium fans when he launched a rocket-shot out of
the park for a Grand Slam homerun.  Pittsburgh had a total of 11 hits for the
game.  
 
Cecilio Guante(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Joe
Niekro(7-6) was tagged with the loss.  He served up 3 homeruns in his 6 and
2/3 innings.

Andre Dawson had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Olympic Stadium as the Montreal
Expos beat the San Diego Padres by the count of 7 to 5.
 
Montreal brought 3 runs across the plate in the 6th inning when they came up
with 4 base hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Dawson who thrilled
the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners.  Montreal out-hit San
Diego for the game, 12 hits to 8.  
 
The win was credited to Scott Sanderson(7-1) who went 6 innings allowing 4
runs. Sanderson got help from Woodie Fryman who was credited with his 7th
save.  Juan Eichelberger(6-5) was the losing pitcher.  He was hit hard and
gave up 11 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

The Cincinnati Reds edged the St. Louis Cardinals at Riverfront Stadium by the
score of 4 to 3.
 
Bruce Berenyi(8-6) had a solid outing for Cincinnati.  He went 8 and 2/3
innings and surrended up 7 hits and 5 walks.  St. Louis had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
Tom Hume recorded the save, his 6th.  The loss was charged to Bob Forsch(9-5).
He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
