1982 MLB All Star Game

July 13, 1982

Milwaukee Brewer SS Robin Yount led the way to the AL's 5-2 victory over the NL in tonight's MLB All Star Game.  Yount clubbed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI for the junior circuit. It was the first All Star Game played outside of the USA in 53 years of play. Montreal's Olympic Stadium was the host site for the game and hometown catcher gave the fans a reason to cheer when he hit a solo homerun in the 8th inning for the NL. The AL jumped out to a 4 run lead in the top of the 1st inning with Yount's 2 run homer the big blow. 7 AL pitchers held the NL batters to 3 hits in the game.

1982 AL Standings

July 13, 1982

My Detroit Tigers have played well above my expectations. At the All Star break Detroit is a MLB best 57-27 (14 games better than their actual record). They lead the AL East by 11 games over 2nd place Milwaukee. The Tigers Runs/Agnst Differential is 114. Only the AL West leading California Angels have a better Differential (126).  Detroit is the top run producing team (457) and California has allowed the least (329).

July 13, 1982

The California Angels hold the top spots in the 3 main batting categories in the AL at the All Star break. Rod Carew leads in BA (.351), Doug Decinces leads in RBI (65) and is tied with New York's Dave Winfield in HR (19). Detroit's Jack Morris leads MLB in Wins (14) and Larry Herndon is 2nd in RBI (63). Cleveland's Len Barker has been the best overall pitcher in the AL with a 13-2 record, 2.35 ERA (2nd in the (AL) and 116 K's (2nd in the AL). But the biggest League Leader has been Oakland's Rickey Henderson. He's stolen 95 bases at the break. Henderson runs at will and is on pace to shatter the MLB record for Stolen Bases.
Here are the AL League Leaders at the All Star break:

1982 NL Standings

July 13, 1982

The St. Louis Cardinals have been the best team in the NL this season. After a slow start in April (10-11) the Cardinals have been almost unstoppable. St. Louis was 20-8 in both May and June. They are 7-3 so far in July as MLB takes a break for the All Star game. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos have played very well too and are 2nd & 3rd respectively in the NL East. In the NL West, the San Diego Padres continue to hold the top spot. Every other team in the West Division is sub .500. Here are the NL Standings at the All Star Break:

1982 NL News Recap with League Leaders

July 13, 1982

At the All Star break Montreal's Tim Wallach has been a surprise power force in the NL this 1982 season. He leads the league in HR (26) and RBI (77). His teammate Andre Dawson is having a fine season too. He's 2nd in RBI (75), 4th in HR (19) and 5th in BA (.328). Other teammates, Tim Raines, leads the NL in SB with 48 and pitcher Bill Gullickson is 11-2 with a 2.57 ERA. They've been the main reason the Expos have been able to keep the surging St. Louis Cardinals with striking distance in the NL East.
Here are the NL League Leaders at the All Star break:

1982 Detroit Tigers News

July 9, 1982

The Detroit Tigers announced today that centerfielder Kirk Gibson will miss the rest of the 1982 MLB season. Gibson re-injured his wrist last night in Chicago and surgery looks inevitable. The Tigers lost pitcher Dave Rozema earlier this season during a benches clearing brawl against the Minnesota Twins.

1982 AL Game: Det. @ Chi.

July 8, 1982

Detroit's Dan Petry pitched his finest game of the season today shutting out the Chicago White Sox 2-0. Petry allowed only 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3 in winning his 9th game of the season. The White Sox winning streak was halted at 10.

Dan Petry was on top of his game, blanking Chicago on just 2 hits as the
potent Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox by the score of 2 to 0
at Comiskey Park.

Petry(9-6) was simply too much for the Chicago batters. He allowed just 2 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.22 to 3.96. Chicago went
down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.

Lamarr Hoyt(8-5) was given the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 9 hits in 7 and
1/3 innings.

1982 AL Game: Det. @ Chi.

July 7, 1982

My Detroit Tigers came into Chicago today winning their last 6 games in a row and 9 of the last 10. The White Sox were on a 9 game winning streak so something had to give today.
The game was a pitchers duel until the bottom of the 7th. Starter Jerry Ujdur and the Tigers were holding a 1-0 lead when Chicago exploded for 4 runs. Vance Law hit a bases clearing double with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th to give the White Sox the lead 3-1. Chicago added another run and won the ballgame 4-1. They now have a 10 game winning streak and Detroit's streak comes to an end.

1982 Detroit Tigers

July 7, 1982

My Detroit Tigers have won 6 in a row and are 9-1 in their last 10 games. This has allowed the Tigers to in increase their AL East lead to double digits, 10 games, over 2nd place Milwaukee. Like Detroit, the Chicago White Sox have been on a roll winning 9 in a row. The 2 teams will meet in Chicago today for the 1st of 2 games. Someone's streak is going to end.
