1982 AL Standings

September 8, 1982

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Detroit Tigers again last night 6-5, and one week into the month of September Milwaukee is now within 9 games of the AL East leaders. While a tough task for the Brewers to accomplish, catching the Tigers is still possible.
In the AL West the California Angels hold a 6.5 game lead over the 2nd place Kansas City Royals.  With 23+ games left in the season anything could happen.

1982 NL Standings

September 8, 1982

One week into the month of September finds close pennant races in both NL Divisions. As well as the NL East1st place St. Louis Cardinals have played, the Montreal Expos aren't letting up on the pressure. The Expos are 9-1 over their last 10 games and now within 4.5 games of the Cardinals.
The Houston Astros still have the NL West leading San Diego Padres in their crosshairs. Houston is only 2.5 GB, and San Francisco and Atlanta are still in the mix.

1982 AL Game: Det. @ Mil.

September 6, 1982

Trailing 1st place Detroit by 11 games, the 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers are down to their last chance to catch the Tigers. Milwaukee is 4-3 vs. Detroit this season and have 6 games left in head to head action. The Brewers almost have to win all 6 games to have any hope.
Today, Detroit was in Milwaukee for the 1st game of a 3 game series. In a tense pitching duel, the teams were tied 1-1 after 9 innings. Detroit was first to score in extra innings when Larry Herndon hit a 2-run bomb in the 12th inning. But Milwaukee was fighting for their lives and weren't giving up too easily. The Brewers scratched out 2 runs in the bottom of the 12th to tie it up at 3 all. Then in the 13th inning Detroit scored a run on a John Wockenfuss pinch-hit single to take a 4-3 lead. Again, Milwaukee wasn't going down without a fight. With a man on 2nd and 2 out, the Brewers came back one more time to scratch out 2 runs, winning the ballgame 5-4.

1982 AL Standings

September 1, 1982

The 1982 MLB season is entering the last full month of the season. My Detroit Tigers continue their impressive journey to an AL East pennant. This may be the most over performing Detroit team I've ever managed (18 games better than their '82 "Actual" at this point of the season). The Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles have both played close to their "Actual" record but find themselves 11.5 GB Detroit. Baltimore had the best month in August going 22-10.
The California Angels lead the AL West. The Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox continue to be the only teams challenging California but both were sub .500 in August.

1982 NL Standings

September 1, 1982

The St. Louis Cardinals continue their domination as the 1982 NL season enters September. The Cardinals are in 1st place in the East and only the excellent play of the 2nd place Montreal Expos has kept that Division race somewhat close. The Pittsburgh Pirates are also enjoying a fine season but still find themselves 9.5 GB St. Louis.
In the NL West the San Diego Padres occupy 1st place with 3 teams hot on their heels. But the 2nd place Houston Astros are the only other team over .500 in the Division. The Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers (the "Actual" best 2 teams in a tight pennant race in '82), continue their substandard play.

1982 NL Trade News

August 30, 1982

In surprising news announced today the Houston Astros traded ace pitcher Don Sutton to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash and 3 players to be announced later (on Sept. 3rd, Astros received Kevin Bass, Frank DiPino, and Mike Madden).
The news is surprising because the Astros are in the midst of a very close NL West pennant race with the San Diego Padres. Houston is currently in 2nd place, only 2.5 GB the Padres. Giving up a top line pitcher like Sutton doesn't make much sense. Milwaukee is also in a pennant chase in the AL East with the Detroit Tigers. But they are tied for 2nd place with Baltimore, 11 games behind the 1st place Tigers. Getting Sutton will definitely bolster their starting pitching staff, but it's a long shot to think the Brewers will be able to overcome the Detroit ball club.
So far in 1982, Don Sutton's record with Houston:

August 18, 1982

The San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates lit up the scoreboard in a game played tonight at Three Rivers Stadium. The two teams combined for 29 runs, a NL record high this season. The Pirates won the slugfest 17-12. Johnny Ray was the big producer for the Pirates going 5 for 6 with 4 RBI. Darrell Evans smashed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI in a losing effort for San Francisco.

Johnny Ray had 5 hits and 4 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the San
Francisco Giants 17 to 12.

Ray had a big evening at the plate. He delivered a single bringing in a run
in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit in the 4th inning, lined a base-hit
bringing home two baserunners in the 5th inning, doubled resulting in a run
in the 6th inning and smacked a single in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh bats
were very productive in the 1st inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5 hits
and the 6th inning which saw them score 5 runs on 7 hits. San Francisco was
not lacking for run support as they scored in 6 separate innings, yet victory
eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win
ballgames.

Don Robinson(11-7) was the winner allowing 7 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Renie
Martin(5-10) was tagged with the loss. Darrell Evans rocketed 3 homeruns and
had 6 RBI but it wasn't enough for San Francisco.

1982 Detroit Tigers News

August 16, 1982

It was announced before game play today that the Detroit Tigers have sold Richie Hebner to the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NL.

1982 AL Standings and League Leaders

August 16, 1982

We're into the middle of August in the 1982 MLB season. My Detroit Tigers continue to hold their firm grip on 1st place in the AL East. They are playing 15 games above their actual record at this point of the season. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well the Tigers have performed. The other teams in the division have played close to their actual records, most of which was very good. But because of Detroit's over-performing they find themselves far behind in the pennant chase.
The California Angels have been in 1st place in the AL West since April 15th. The Angels have had the top offense and pitching in the AL, resulting in a league best +145 Run/Agnst Differential.  The Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox continue to keep the heat on California.
The Brewers Robin Yount is making a run for the Triple Crown. He leads the AL in hitting with a .346 BA, RBI with 90, and is tied with teammate Gorman Thomas in HR with 28. The Tiger's Jack Morris leads the AL in Wins with 17 but Cleveland's Len Barker has been the best overall pitcher: 16-5, 2.42 ERA, 144 K.
