1982 NL Games

July 25, 1982

  The San Diego Padres have been slumping lately, tightening up the race in the NL West. The San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves have been the beneficiaries of that slump. The Giants and Astros are now only 1.5 GB the Padres and the Braves are just 2 games back.

John Candelaria allowed Chuck Tanner to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and Dave Parker slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh
Pirates topped the Atlanta Braves by a score of 10 to 3 at Three Rivers
Stadium.
 
Parker made sure the Pittsburgh fans enjoyed themselves.  He launched a
three-run homer in the 3rd inning and tripled in the 6th inning.  Pittsburgh
finished with 14 hits in the victory.  
 
Candelaria(9-4) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Rick
Mahler(9-12) took the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 3 walks
in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Dave Lapoint recorded a complete game shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals
topped the Houston Astros in 11 innings by a score of 1 to 0 at Busch
Stadium.
 
Neither pitching staff had allowed a run after the regulation nine innings.
Finally, St. Louis prevailed in the 11th inning.  After two were out Lonnie
Smith slapped a single.  Smith was running on the next pitch and he stole
second.  Keith Hernandez then laced a single giving St. Louis the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd.  St. Louis totaled 8 hits on the
afternoon.  
 
Lapoint(6-4) went the distance for the shutout. Don Sutton(13-5) was the
losing pitcher.  While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 13
batters in 10 and 2/3 innings.

Rich Gale had a complete game and shortstop Johnnie Lemaster had 3 base hits
and 2 RBI as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Montreal Expos 4 to 2 at
Candlestick Park.
 
San Francisco scored 2 runs in the 5th inning when they came up with 3 base
hits.  Darrell Evans started the inning off right when he singled.  Bob
Brenly followed next and he doubled.  Lemaster then delivered a base-hit
scoring two teammates.  San Francisco rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.
 
Gale(9-9), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Scott
Sanderson(8-3) was given the loss.  He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 7
hits and no walks.

In a game at Jack Murphy Stadium the New York Mets offense put up 4 runs on
the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and got by the San Diego Padres by the score
of 4 to 1.
 
New York did all the necessary damage in the 3rd inning scoring 4 runners on 5
hits.  That early run support was enough for Charlie Puleo(2-13) and New
York.  Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd inning with no runs
scored after that point.  
 
Terry Leach was credited with his 1st save.  John Montefusco(7-6) was the
losing pitcher.  He pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 walks.
