1982 NL Game: Houston @ St.Louis

July 25, 1982

If you like pitching duels, there was quite a matchup last night in St. Louis. The Houston Astro's Don Sutton lost a tough one to Dave Lapoint and the Cardinals. The game was a scoreless affair until the 11th inning. After 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th, St. Louis was able to scratch out the victory on a Keith Hernandez RBI single. Both pitchers went the distance and Sutton struck out 13 in a losing effort.

Dave Lapoint recorded a complete game shutout as the St. Louis Cardinals
topped the Houston Astros in 11 innings by a score of 1 to 0 at Busch
Stadium.

Neither pitching staff had allowed a run after the regulation nine innings.
Finally, St. Louis prevailed in the 11th inning. After two were out Lonnie
Smith slapped a single. Smith was running on the next pitch and he stole
second. Keith Hernandez then laced a single giving St. Louis the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd. St. Louis totaled 8 hits on the
afternoon.

Lapoint(6-4) went the distance for the shutout. Don Sutton(13-5) was the
losing pitcher. While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 13
batters in 10 and 2/3 innings.
