The California Angels have gone ice cold. They lost their 8th game in a row today, 3-4 against the New York Yankees. Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals have been winning at an impressive pace. Chicago now stands 1 GB the Angels and KC is only 2 games back in the AL West.

Right fielder Oscar Gamble jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI at
Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the floundering California Angels
4 to 3.
New York went ahead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. California tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Tommy John(6-9) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Dave
Righetti got the save, his 1st. Dave Goltz(2-8) was hit with the loss. He
was knocked around by New York, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Gene Mauch said.
'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'

The Kansas City Royals nipped the Milwaukee Brewers 9 to 8 at Royals Stadium
in a hard fought contest.
Don Slaught had a big day at the plate. He doubled plating two runs in the
2nd inning, doubled in the 5th inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun in
the 6th inning. Milwaukee threatened in the 9th but Kansas City was able to
put down the rally.
Mike Armstrong(4-2) allowed 3 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Armstrong got help from Dan Quisenberry who earned his 24th save.
Jerry Augustine(1-4) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit
and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.
'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Slaught said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

Left fielder Steve Kemp had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox bested
the slumping Toronto Blue Jays 7 to 2 at Comiskey Park.
Lamarr Hoyt(11-5) earned his pay with a solid performance for Chicago. He
surrendered 8 hits and no walks in 7 innings. Chicago had a total of 13 hits
for the game.
Salome Barojas recorded the save, his 9th. The loss was charged to Jim
Clancy(9-8). He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3
innings.
Chicago remained hot, improving their record to 55-39. They now have a record
of 8-2 in recent days. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Toronto
is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 42-53, worst in the division.
