1982 AL Game: Tor @ Det.

August 6, 1982

Detroit's Jack Morris (pictured) and Toronto's Dave Stieb locked up in a tense pitching duel tonight at Tiger Stadium. The game was scoreless until Detroit won it in the bottom of the 11th inning. Lance Parrish doubled in Larry Herndon from 1st base with the winning run. There was a play at the plate and Herndon was able to slide in safely for the 1-0 Tiger victory. Morris went the distance for his 3rd shutout and 17th Win of the season.

Catcher Lance Parrish hit 2 doubles and Jack Morris shut down the Toronto
batters on just 5 hits as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays
in 11 innings by the score of 1 to 0 at Tiger Stadium.

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Detroit came out the victor
in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Larry Herndon lined a
base-hit. Parrish stepped into the batter's box and he doubled giving
Detroit the victory and sending the 35,149 home-town fans home happy.
Detroit finished with 8 hits in the victory.

For Morris(17-9) it was his 3rd shutout this year. Dave Stieb(10-8) was
charged with the loss. When questioned about his counterpart after the game,
Stieb was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were
going to be in for a long night. Morris brought his 'A' game with him - he
had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one
or two bad pitches the entire game!

1982 AL Standings

August 1, 1982

The calendar turns to August in the 1982 MLB season. There would be quite a good pennant race in the AL East if not for the Detroit Tigers. My Tigers have over performed in a big way, 14 Wins over their actual amount at this point in the season. Milwaukee, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland and New York are all within 5 games of each other in the standings. They've all under performed a little bit, but coupled with Detroit's outstanding play they all trail the Tigers by double digits.
There's a good pennant race going on in the AL West. The California Angels hold a slim 3 game lead over the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. Chicago had the best month in July with a 21-6 record. Kansas City was next with a 19-8 record.

1982 NL Standings

August 1, 1982

The St. Louis Cardinals continue to dominate the NL. No matter how well the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos play, the Cardinals keep pulling further away in the NL East. St. Louis was a league best 18-7 in July and are currently on a 7 game winning streak.
The San Diego Padres are still hanging on to 1st place in the NL West. Even though they are sub .500 teams, Houston, San Francisco, and Atlanta are all in the hunt.

1982 NL News Recap and League Leaders

August 1, 1982

San Diego's catcher Terry Kennedy continues to surprise everyone with his high level of consistency at the plate as well as behind it. Kennedy leads the NL in hitting with a .332 BA and has been very effective in leading the Padres pitching staff and stopping opponents from stealing bases. Atlanta's Bob Horner is trying hard to help the Braves stay in the NL West pennant race. He now leads the NL in HR with 32 and is 2nd in RBI (86). Houston's pitching staff led by Don Sutton, Nolan Ryan and Joe Niekro is the best in the NL. They've needed to be considering the Astro's woeful hitting attack. Montreal and Pittsburgh are getting outstanding production from Expos: Tim Wallach, Andre Dawson, and Pirates:Johnny Ray, Bill Madlock.  The NL East1st place St. Louis Cardinals are notably absent among the top League Leaders with the exception of Bruce Sutter. Sutter is 7-4 with 21 saves and a 1.44 ERA.

1982 NL Game: Houston @ St.Louis

July 25, 1982

If you like pitching duels, there was quite a matchup last night in St. Louis. The Houston Astro's Don Sutton lost a tough one to Dave Lapoint and the Cardinals. The game was a scoreless affair until the 11th inning. After 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th, St. Louis was able to scratch out the victory on a Keith Hernandez RBI single. Both pitchers went the distance and Sutton struck out 13 in a losing effort.

Dennis Lamp carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and Tony Bernazard blasted
2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Chicago White Sox man-handled the Detroit
Tigers - the final score was 21 to 5.

Bernazard propelled Chicago to victory. He blasted a solo shot in the 1st
inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer in
the 7th inning, delivered a single which scored a run in the 8th inning and
slapped a base-hit in the 9th inning. Chicago provided plenty of action in
the 5th inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits, the 7th inning with 4 runs on
3 hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 7 hits. The Chicago
offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Lamp(7-3) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. The
right-handed Lamp lost his chance for a no-hitter when Larry Herndon singled
with one out in the 7th inning. Milt Wilcox(10-6) ended up with the loss.
He got hit pretty hard, allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
