First baseman Rod Carew hit 2 doubles as the California Angels bested the
Kansas City Royals 7 to 3 at Royals Stadium.
 
California tallied 3 runs in the 5th inning when they came up with 3 base
hits.  Don Baylor led off and got things going when he laced a single.
Baylor took his lead and swiped second.  Doug Decinces then doubled bringing
in a run.  Bobby Grich followed next and he reached on an error.  California
continued their aggressive style with another stolen base.  Tim Foli
continued the rally and delivered a single as another two runners scored.
Foli took second on the throw.  California had 11 hits for the night while
Kansas City had 7.  
 
The win went to Bruce Kison(9-7) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Kison was helped out by Luis Sanchez who recorded his 12th save.  Dennis
Leonard(1-8) was the losing pitcher.

  The San Diego Padres played a NL season record 21 innings tonight before defeating the Cincinnati  Reds 2-1. The Win allowed the NL West leading Padres to hold off the hard charging Los Angeles Dodgers for a least 1 more game and reduced their Magic # to 2. LA has been 9-1 lately, SD is 5-5.
 In the NL East, the 1st place St. Louis Cardinals lost their 7th game in a row today. Luckily for them Montreal also lost today, keeping the Expos 1.5 games behind.

Alan Wiggins had 2 base hits and Dave Dravecky had a strong outing at Jack
Murphy Stadium where the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds in 21
innings by the score of 2 to 1.
 
Both teams were tied at 1 run apiece after nine innings.  San Diego won the
hard fought contest in the 21st inning.  Tony Gwynn singled.  Garry Templeton
stepped into the batter's box and he slapped a base-hit.  Rick Lancellotti
then drew a walk to load the bases.  Kurt Bevacqua was up next and he laced a
one-base hit giving San Diego the victory as 50,162 happy fans celebrated
wildly.  Overall San Diego out-hit Cincinnati 13 to 7.  
 
Tim Lollar(19-9) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. The
loss was charged to Greg Harris(2-8) in relief.  He pitched 3 innings
allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.

where the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4 to 1.
 
Detroit took the lead for good in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run.
That early run support was all that Petry(16-11) required.  Detroit managed 7
hits in their victory.  
 
Scott McGregor(12-15) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 8 innings allowing 7
hits and 1 walk.

 The St. Louis Cardinals have now lost 6 games in a row after the Montreal Expos defeated them 7-5 tonight. Steve Rogers pitched well enough to pick up his 21st Win for the Expos. With the victory Montreal has pulled within 1.5 games of the NL East leading Cardinals.

Shortstop Chris Speier slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Olympic Stadium
where the Montreal Expos beat the reeling St. Louis Cardinals by the score of
7 to 5.
 
St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Montreal went ahead in the 2nd
inning scoring a single run on 3 hits.  St. Louis made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
Steve Rogers(21-7) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Jeff Reardon earned the save, his 23rd.  Bob Forsch(16-7) suffered
the loss.

 The Detroit Tiger's Magic # is down to 2 in the AL East. Milwaukee had been hot for a while, but have lost their last 3 in a row to the Baltimore Orioles.
