1982 World Series Game 1: Cal. @ Mon.

October 12, 1982

  The Montreal Expos won game 1 of the 1982 World Series 5-1 against the California Angels. The Expos got strong pitching from Steve Rogers and even stronger hitting from Gary Carter. Montreal jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st inning when they got back-to-back homers from Carter (pictured) and Al Oliver off Angel starter Geoff Zahn. Carter's homerun was a 2-run shot. California got a run in the 3rd inning making it 3-1 but Carter hit his 2nd 2-run homer of the game in the 6th. Rogers went the distance for Montreal allowing the 1 run on 7 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Carter finished with 4 RBI on the day.
 Game 2 tomorrow in Montreal will see Bill Gullickson (20-9, 2.67 ERA) starting for the home team and Bruce Kison (9-7, 2.53 ERA) starting for California.

Catcher Gary Carter launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Steve Rogers allowed
Jim Fanning to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Montreal
Expos bested the California Angels 5 to 1 at Olympic Stadium.
 
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Carter.  He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st inning and popped
a two-run clout over the fence in the 6th inning.  Montreal had a total of 8
hits for the game.  
 
Rogers(1-0), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Geoff
Zahn(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3
innings.

 The 1982 World Series will feature the AL Champion California Angels (96-66) against the NL Champion Montreal Expos (99-63). It's a best of 7 Series and has a 2-3-2 format with a travel/off day in between city changes. Montreal will host games 1 and 2 at Olympic Stadium beginning tomorrow. Steve Rogers (22-7, 2.44 ERA) will start for the Expos. Geoff Zahn (18-9, 3.84 ERA) will start for the Angels.

1982 ALCS Game 5: California Wins the AL Pennant!

October 10, 1982

  The California Angels are the 1982 AL Champions! California defeated the Detroit Tigers tonight in Game 5 of the ALCS 4-2. The game was a tight battle until the 9th inning. Tiger starter Jack Morris was able to get out of a number of jams throughout the game until Reggie Jackson hit a solo homerun with 2 outs in the 9th.
  Detroit scored 2 runs off Angel starter Ken Forsch in the 1st inning on 2 hits and a rare error by 3rd baseman Doug Decinces. In the top of the 5th inning Reggie Jackson, who had been struggling at the plate all Series, hit a 2-run homer off Morris tying the game at 2. The game remained tied at 2 until the 9th when Jackson hit his 2nd homerun of the game. The Angels added another run in the inning making it 4-2 and Detroit went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. Ken Forsch went the distance for California allowing only 2 unearned runs on 4 hits. The California Angels are the 1982 AL Champions!

Right fielder Reggie Jackson cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Ken Forsch
had a strong outing as the California Angels beat the Detroit Tigers by a
score of 4 to 2.
 
California came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning plating 2
runs on 3 base hits.  After two were out Jackson started the attack as he
cracked a solo homerun.  Don Baylor stepped up next and he lined a one-base
hit.  Fred Lynn then doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  California
totaled 12 hits on the night.  
 
Forsch(1-0) allowed 2 runs on the game. Jack Morris(0-1) absorbed the loss.
He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 and
2/3 innings.  
 
'He came out with good stuff,' Gene Mauch said about Forsch. 'He threw the
ball good from the first pitch on.'

1982 NLCS Game 4: Montreal Wins the NL Pennant!

October 10, 1982

  The Montreal Expos are the 1982 NL Champions! The Expos defeated the San Diego Padres today in Game 4 of the NLCS 4-0. The starters, Scott Sanderson for Montreal and Dave Dravecky for San Diego, were locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. In the top of the 7th Andre Dawson reached base on an error. Al Oliver then walked and Dravecky was replaced by Luis Deleon. Deleon got Gary Carter to fly out and struck out Tim Wallach. Then, with 2 outs, the next batter Chris Speier, just cleared the leftfield wall for a 3-run homer. Montreal added a run in the 8th and Jeff Reardon pitched the final 2 innings to secure the Win, giving the Expos the NL Pennant.

In a game for the baseball purist, Scott Sanderson(1-0) and Dave Dravecky(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Montreal Expos finally emerged
victorious over San Diego Padres, 4 to 0. Chris Spier hit a 3 run homer in the 7th 
for the go ahead runs. 
Sanderson put on a good performance.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 3 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.  Sanderson chalked up 8
strikeouts.  Montreal managed only 6 hits on the afternoon.

1982 ALCS Game 4: Cal. @ Det.

October 9, 1982

  The California Angels evened the ALCS 2 games to 2 by defeating the Detroit Tigers tonight 5-2. The game was a pitchers duel until the 7th inning. Detroit had scratched out a run in the 5th inning and led 1-0 heading into the 7th. Angel catcher led off the 7th by hitting a homerun off Milt Wilcox tying the game 1-1. Later that inning California loaded the bases and Fred Lynn came through with a clutch bases clearing double off Tiger reliever Dave Rucker. Both teams added a run in the 8th making it 5-2. The Angels got their run when Bobby Grich hit his 3rd homerun of the Series. Luis Sanchez came on in relief for California starter Tommy John in the 8th and ended up with a Save.
  The final and deciding game of the Series will be tomorrow night in Detroit. Staff aces Ken Forsch (19-9, 2.53 ERA) and Jack Morris (21-12, 4.24 ERA), neither who fared well in Game 1, will get the starting nods.

At Tiger Stadium the California Angels outscored the Detroit Tigers 5 to
2.
 
California came up with 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning with the help of 3
hits.  The key offensive moment was provided by Fred Lynn who silenced Tiger
Stadium as he doubled plating three runs.  Detroit out-hit California 11 to
8, but California ended up with more runs.  
 
The win went to Tommy John(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Luis
Sanchez earned his 1st save.  Milt Wilcox(0-1) was hit with the loss.  
 

1982 NLCS Game 3: Mon. @ SD

October 9, 1982

  In an exciting Game 3 of the 1982 NLCS the Montreal Expos defeated the San Diego Padres 3-1.
San Diego opened the scoring when Terry Kennedy hit a homerun in the 3rd inning off Montreal's Charlie Lea. Padre starter Eric Show was sailing along until the 7th inning when Tim Wallach hit a 2-run shot giving the Expos a 2-1 lead. Chris Spier followed with a homerun making it 3-1 and Show's day was over. Lea pitched an excellent game, going the distance for Montreal allowing 6 hits and striking out 7.
  Montreal now leads the best of 5 Series 2 games to 1. Scott Sanderson (13-8, 3.25 ERA) will start for the Expos tomorrow. Dave Dravecky (8-3, 2.50 ERA) will try to extend the Series 1 more game for San Diego.

Chris Speier connected with a 'big fly' and Charlie Lea came through with a
solid 9 innings at Jack Murphy Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the San
Diego Padres by the score of 3 to 1.
 
Montreal scored all of the necessary runs in the 7th inning when they came up
with 3 runs on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Tim Wallach who
quieted the home crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.
Montreal rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Lea(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Eric Show(0-1) was
hit with the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.
 
When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Show was lavish in his
praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long
night.  Lea brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to
spot it perfectly.  He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire
game!

1982 ALCS Game 3: Cal. @ Det.

October 8, 1982

  The Detroit Tigers defeated the California Angels today 2-1, taking a 2-1 lead in the best of 5 ALCS. Young Tiger pitcher Jerry Udjur went 6 2/3 innings allowing 1 run in getting the Win. Dave Rucker and Elias Sosa pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutdown relief with Sosa getting a Save. Detroit got a run in the bottom of the 1st after Lou Whitaker led off with a triple and Alan Trammell followed with an RBI sacrifice fly. Jerry Turner hit a homerun in the bottom of the 2nd. That provided all the runs the Tigers would need today. Bruce Kison pitched well for California going 8 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Offensively the Angels could only get a solo homerun from Doug Decinces. They went 0-5 with men in scoring postion.
  Milt Wilcox will get the start for Detroit tomorrow. California will counter with Tommy John.

At Tiger Stadium, the Detroit fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.  Jerry
Ujdur(1-0) finally bested his California opposite, Bruce Kison(0-1), by the
score of 2 to 1.
 
Ujdur gave a fine effort for Detroit.  He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering
5 hits and 3 walks.  The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither
team was able to score again.  
 
Elias Sosa earned his 1st save.  Kison was charged with the loss.  He pitched
8 innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk.
