It took extra innings, but the red-hot Baltimore Orioles won their 9th game in a row tonight by defeating the Chicago White Sox 6-5. Ken Singleton hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the 10th to win the game for the Birds. The Orioles are now 11-1 on the season, good for 1st place in the AL East. For Chicago, it was their 7th loss in a row.

35,025 fans watched an exciting game at Memorial Stadium. The red-hot
Baltimore Orioles topped the floundering Chicago White Sox by the slimmest of
margins, 6 to 5.
Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings. Baltimore won it in the
10th inning. Rick Dempsey ripped a base-hit. Lenn Sakata came next and he
slapped a single. Al Bumbry then stroked a one-base hit to load the bases.
After an out was recorded, Ken Singleton stepped up to the plate and he lined
a single resulting in an exciting win for Baltimore and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Baltimore banged out 13 hits on the
night.
Sammy Stewart(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The loss
was charged to Jerry Koosman(0-3) in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits in
3 and 1/3 innings.
