September 21, 1982

  As the 1982 NL campaign nears the end of the regular season both the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres hold on to 4 game leads in their divisions. The excellent Montreal Expos continue to chase the Cardinals in the NL East. 4 teams are chasing the Padres in the NL West but the closest team, Houston, has been 1-9 in their last 10 games. The Astros may be regretting trading top pitcher Don Sutton. LA and Atlanta are finally making a push, but it may be too late for them.

1982 AL Game: Det. @ Bal. Morris Wins 20th

  Detroit's Jack Morris won his 20th game of the season tonight in Baltimore as the Tigers defeated the Orioles 4-0. It was the Jack's 4th try at winning his 20th and he became the 2nd pitcher in the AL this season to reach the milestone. The Tigers scored 2 runs in the 1st inning off Jim Palmer when Lance Parrish smashed his 33rd homerun of the year. That would be all the runs Morris would need for his complete game shutout of the Orioles. Detroit's Magic # is now down to 6.

Jack Morris whitewashed Baltimore on 2 hits and Lance Parrish slammed a
homerun and had 2 RBI as the dominant Detroit Tigers outscored the Baltimore
Orioles 4 to 0.
 
Morris(20-11) was virtually untouchable.  He gave up just 2 hits and 4 walks
in 9 innings.  Detroit had a total of 8 hits for the game.  
 
Jim Palmer(16-7) suffered the loss.  The Detroit ballclub's record now stands
at a division leading 94-55.  With the loss, Baltimore has a record of 3-7
lately, 82-69 overall.

  Montreal's Steve Rogers became the 1st 20 game winner in the NL this season, going the distance in the Expos 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. Rogers allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7 in the game.

Steve Rogers had a strong outing as the Montreal Expos defeated the New York
Mets 2 to 1 at Olympic Stadium.
 
Rogers(20-5) was simply too much for the New York batters.  He allowed just 4
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.  New York had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.  
 
Rick Ownbey(1-2) was hit with the loss.  When questioned about his counterpart
after the game, Ownbey was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early
on that we were going to be in for a long night.  Rogers brought his 'A' game
with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly.  He probably
only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

  It's two weeks into the month of September and the AL East leading Detroit Tiger's magic # is now at 10. The 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers have gained a couple games on Detroit this month but they are running out of time.
  The Kansas City Royals have been red hot this month (10-2) and are now within 4 games of the 1st place California Angels in the AL West. The Angels have stumbled a bit in September (6-7) and have lost their last 3 in a row.
 Milwaukee's Robin Yount and Baltimore's Eddie Murray are both still vying for the Triple Crown, and Oakland's Rickey Henderson (132 SB) has broken the MLB single season record of 131 SB. Cleveland's Len Barker (20-5, 2.45 ERA, 185 K's) is the top pitcher in the AL.

1982 NL Standings and League Leaders

September 14, 1982

  Two weeks into September finds the 2nd place teams in both Divisions of the NL putting big-time pressure on both division leaders. The Montreal Expos have pulled within 4 games of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL East. The Houston Astros are within 2 games of the San Diego Padres in the NL West. No matter that the Cardinals are playing at an exceptional .629 rate, they can't seem to shake the Expos.
  Montreal boasts the top 2 Winning pitchers in the NL with Steve Rogers (19 Wins) and Bill Gullickson (18 Wins). Andre Dawson (114 RBI) and the surprising Tim Wallach (36 HR, 114 RBI) have been leading the offensive attack of the Expos. The Astros have been right behind the Padres for quite a while, at one point this month only .5 GB. With less than 20 games left in the season, it looks to be an exciting finish in the NL.

  In the longest game in MLB this season, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 21 innings 4-3. The game was tied 3-3 after 9 innings before Philadelphia's Garry Maddox singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 21st. The Phillies used 9 pitchers in the game and the Cardinals used 7. A total of 50 players saw action in the game. The loss by St. Louis allowed the Montreal Expos to creep within 4 games of the NL East leaders.

Garry Maddox had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Veterans Stadium where the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 21 innings by the score of 4 to
3.
 
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings.  Philadelphia ended
up winning it in the 21st inning.  Gary Matthews doubled.  Mike Schmidt
stepped into the batter's box and he was walked intentionally.  Two outs
later Maddox stepped up to the plate and he stroked a one-base hit giving
Philadelphia the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.
Philadelphia had 19 hits for the night while St. Louis had 14.  
 
John Denny(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. John
Martin(4-3) suffered the loss in relief.  With the win Philadelphia now has a
record of 73-70.  With this loss, St. Louis has a 5-5 record of late, 89-53
overall.

September 11, 1982

 In a wild game at Fenway Park last night the Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-7. The game was wild because the lead changed hands 7 times. In the 9th inning Detroit trailed the Sox 6-7. With 2 outs and a man on 2nd, the Tigers Glen Wilson (pictured) hit a 2-run homer off closer Mark Clear. Detroit Tiger started Milt Wilcox was chased in the 5th inning, giving up 7 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks. The Tiger bullpen came through at that point, holding Boston scoreless the last 4 2/3 innings. Howard Bailey pitched 3 of those innings and got the Win, his 1st. Pat Underwood got the last out and the Save, his 4th of the season.

Right fielder Glenn Wilson left the yard and had 2 RBI at Fenway Park as the
amazing Detroit Tigers won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Boston
Red Sox by the count of 8 to 7.
 
Detroit had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning plating 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits.  Howard Johnson led off and got things going when he
stroked a base-hit.  Johnson was safe at second on a stolen base.  John
Wockenfuss followed, but he was set down on strikes.  Mike Laga dug into the

two-run homer.  A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 7 times.
 
Howard Bailey(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing
no runs. Pat Underwood earned his 4th save.  Mark Clear(7-7) was the loser in
relief.  
 
'The only way this one could have been better', said Bailey, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
