1982 AL Newspaper Recap with League Leaders

July 1, 1982

The ageless Carl Yastrzemski leads the AL in hitting. The Boston slugger is 43 years old and spends almost all his time as the team DH now, but he's had a big impact on the Red Sox's winning record. Detroit's Jack Morris leads the AL in wins (12) and Larry Herndon is the surprise leader in RBI (53).

1982 NL Standings

July 1, 1982

We've (finally) reached the month of July in the 1982 MLB season.  The St. Louis Cardinals played inspired baseball in June, going a NL best 20-8. The Cardinals hold 1st place in the NL East but Pittsburgh and Montreal continue to play well and are right behind St. Louis. Philadelphia faltered in June, going 12-17, and find themselves 12.5 out of the top spot.
In the NL West the San Diego Padres still hold 1st place with Houston 4.5 games behind them. The Atlanta Braves (actual 1982 NL West winners) have picked up the pace after a horrible start on the season, going 15-12 in June. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to flounder and have the worst record in the NL.

Reid Nichols had 4 hits and 5 RBI at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox beat
the Milwaukee Brewers 18 to 13.

Nichols enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the
1st inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, lined a single in the 4th inning and
singled bringing in two baserunners in the 5th inning. Boston provided
plenty of action in the 1st inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 4 hits and
the 3rd inning with 7 runs on 6 hits. Even though they scored in 5 different
innings, Milwaukee was not able to pull off the win.

The win went to Mark Clear(4-4) who allowed 2 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. Randy
Lerch(4-2) was tagged with the loss.
