April 4, 1982
After the 1981 MLB strike shortened season, everyone is ready to put that debacle behind them and get back to playing a full, exciting year of baseball. The actual 1982 MLB season saw the rise of 'Harvey's Wallbangers' to 1st place in the AL East. Milwaukee won the East by defeating the Baltimore Orioles on the last day of the regular season. The California Angels won the AL West in a tightly contested race with the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago White Sox. In the AL playoffs, the Angels held a commanding 2 games to none lead before the Milwaukee Brewers came back to win the next 3 games and the AL Pennant.
In the NL, the Atlanta Braves won the West after the LA Dodgers lost their last game of the season. In the NL East, the St. Louis Cardinals won in a close race with the Philadelphia Phillies. St. Louis swept the Braves 3-0 in the NL Championship Series.
Milwaukee and St. Louis matched up in a very exciting 7 game World Series. The Cardinals were down 3 games to 2 before winning the final 2 games and the 1982 MLB World Series Championship.
My Detroit Tigers (83-79) finished the '82 season in 4th place in the AL East, 12 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers. The Tigers had a young exciting team and were predicted by many to battle for the AL Pennant. With a nucleus of C Lance Parrish, SS Alan Trammell, 2B Lou Whitaker, CF Kirk Gibson up the middle and added veterans Richie Hebner, Chet Lemon, and Enos Cabell, the Tigers were sure to have a potent lineup. With Jack Morris, Dan Petry and Milt Wicox heading the pitching staff, the only real question was the 4th starter and the bullpen. While Detroit did have a good season, they didn't live up to their potential. Managing Detroit in this replay, I'll try to improve their record and place in the AL Standings.
The 1982 Strat-O-Matic AsPlayed Replay season will begin tomorrow on April 5th with the traditional MLB Opening Game in Cincinnati. The Reds will host the Chicago Cubs. The AL will open with a game in Baltimore with the Orioles taking on the Kansas City Royals.
(Note: This post will remain 'pinned' at the top for the duration of this 1982 replay)

1982 World Series Wrap Up
October 22, 1982
Here are the Line Scores and Stats Leaders from the just completed 1982 World Series Won by the California Angels. Looking at the stats, one might have thought the Montreal Expos won the Series. The Expos outscored California 31-29, out homered them 12-5 and had a team ERA of 2.23 versus the 3.97 of the Angels. The big factor in the Series was the 11 errors committed by Montreal. California had only 2. 12 of the 29 runs scored by the Angels were unearned.
It was a close World Series though and a lot of fun to play. 3 of the games went extra innings, all won by the Angels.

1982 World Series Game 7: California wins the World Series!
October 20, 1982
What an exciting end to the 1982 World Series! It took 13 innings but the California Angels defeated the Montreal Expos 5-3. Brian Downing hit a clutch 2-run single in the top of the 13th and Luis Sanchez completed his superb relief performance by striking out the side in the bottom of the 13th for the Win.
The Expos defense let them down again in this Series as 4 of California's 5 runs were unearned. In the top of the 1st inning Tim Wallach's error led to 2 runs being scored. Gary Carter hit a 2-run homer of the bottom of the 2nd for the Expos making it 3-2 in favor of the Angels. It was Carter's 5th homerun of the Series. Montreal scored an unearned run themselves in the 6th tying the game up at 3-3. That score held up for the next 6 innings as relievers on both teams shut down the offense.
Finally, in the top of the 13th California scored 2 runs on 2 walks, an error, and Downing's clutch 2-run single. Angels' manager Gene Mauch allowed Sanchez to pitch 5 1/3 innings in relief because he kept the Expos at bay with an excellent performance. Sanchez allowed only 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 5 during his stint on the mound. For Sanchez, it was his 2nd Win of the Series.
The California Angels take the World Series 4 games to 3 and are the 1982 MLB Champions!

Luis Sanchez delivered 5 and one third solid innings as the California Angels
bested the Montreal Expos in 13 innings 5 to 3 at Olympic Stadium.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Finally, California pulled the game out
in the 13th inning. Reggie Jackson led off and keyed the rally when he drew
a walk. Doug Decinces stepped into the batter's box and he reached on an
error. Two outs later Bob Boone stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk
to load the bases. Brian Downing came up and he singled scoring two
teammates. Both teams finished the game with 8 hits.
The victory was credited to Sanchez(2-0) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing
no runs. Woodie Fryman(0-1) was the loser in relief. He was pinned with the
loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
